Jerusalem

...We sailed into Haifa on a foggy morning after almost blundering into the ancient city of Tyre on the Lebanese coast, and after being scrutinized by an Israeli patrol boat which wanted to be sure we weren't terrorists sneaking in a bomb.
...Actually this drawing was made on a previous visit, shortly after the Six Day War when Israel recaptured the eastern part of Jerusalem which had been taken by Jordan in 1948.
...This area was in the part of the city that had always been in Jewish hands. It was a section called Mea Sharim, or Hundred Gates, and was inhabited largely by an ultra orthodox sect of Jews who dressed as they had in Poland centuries ago. Their costumes fitted well with the ancient houses in which they lived.
