...Palermo is an old city on the north coast of Sicily. We traveled around the city in horse drawn taxis which were cheaper and easier to get than the regular motorized taxis. The Sicilians disdained them as old fashioned and outmoded.
...The drawing is of a religious procession. The enormous and lavishly gilded shrine which probably contained the bones of a saint was borne on the shoulders of dozens of men. Taking place as it did on a street of venerable buildings it looked very medieval, but alongside the priest walked a large man in work clothes who carried an amplifier on his back and a loudspeaker on his chest. With one hand he held a microphone in front of the priest, who chanted into it. His amplified voice was rich and sonorous, and seemed to fill the ancient street.
